Founder and Teaching Artist
Joe P has had the creative pleasure of exploring and establishing himself as a Poet, Stage Actor, Playwright, Director and Educator in Houston. For over 10 years, he has been dedicated to continually developing his craft, as well as helping others to find their purpose through the creative arts. Joe P has performed with such theatres as The Ensemble Theatre, Stages Repertory Theatre, 4th Wall Theatre Co, AD Players, and The Alley Theatre. He has also partnered with Young Audiences of Houston, LINKS, and The World Youth Foundation, impacting the lives of youth and creating platforms for adult artists. Under his own umbrella, Joe P founded ACTing Up Studios to combine poetic and theatrical influences – helping students of the art to begin to shape themselves into true performance artists and life leaders. For his valiant efforts, Joe was awarded the “Leadership in Action” Congressional Recognition award for his services to youth.
His career in Poetry has seasoned since his first introduction to the art in 2006. He has featured on numerous stages across the United States, including a Season 4 performance on the nationally televised Lexus Verses and Flow on TV One, and was named co-host of one of Houston’s longest running poetry show, The Poetry Lounge.
Acting is his first love, Poetry is his passion, and Teaching is his Purpose.
DARNETTA D. NELSON
Native of Detroit, Michigan and now a permanent resident of Houston, Texas, Darnetta is a graduate of Prairie View A&M University earning a Masters in Community Development. She has worked in Project and Program Management for over ten years, with a focus in special events planning and educational programming. Darnetta has always reveled in the act of helping others to their performance destination, whether it be in service, development, and especially creative arts. Behind the scenes is where the magic happens! Since 2010, Darnetta has had an inspired commitment to functioning versatility – every puzzle piece has a purpose and level of execution.
As the liaison support with such organizations as the Alley Theatre, The Ensemble Theatre, Mack Performing Arts Collective, The World Youth Foundation, Black Box Theatre, Young Audiences of Houston, and several churches – Darnetta has successfully helped to manage countless after school programs, monologue competitions, youth arts camps, and customized themed productions through AUS. She is currently lead support for the YMCA of Greater Houston – Weekley Family branch, allocating scholarship funds for youth programming and healthy living, and also serves as “second to the chief” of operations for Jazz Education, Inc.
With ACTing Up Studios, Darnetta continues to broaden her familiarity of program coordination and community engagement, as her passion to provide an accessible network of cultural arts programming evolves.
Consultant Teaching Artist
Born in Shreveport, Louisiana but raised in the city of Houston, Kendrick “KayB” Brown, was introduced to theatre his sophomore year of HS. On the HS level, and then on through college at Prairie View A&M University majoring in Theatre, KayB achieved honors through One-Act Play Competitions, All-Star Cast Acting and Monologue competition awards, Irene Ryan Award Nominations, Best Actor Awards, Best Director Awards and many Leadership Awards. Instilled with method acting, acting styles, directing and his own flare for something uniquely different, KayB had found his Purpose – “to use art in order to created change.” He started out working with the Alley Theatre's HYPE (Houston’s Young Playwrights Exchange) program while teaching MS theatre at Briarmeadow Charter School.
Now since 2006, KayB has directed, performed, stage managed and/or worked at The Ensemble Theatre, New Federal Theatre (New York), Houston Grand Opera, Black Box Theatre, AD Players, and 4th Wall Theatre. His show credits include Too Heavy for Your Pocket, Lilies of the Field, Front Porch Society, What I Learned in Paris, The Ballad of Emmett Till, Fly, Fences, One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show, Midsummer Nights Dream, Immediate Family, Before It Hits Home, Hamlet, Biloxi Blues, and many others. Consultant Teaching Artist
Robert is a Houston native who has been involved in theater over 25 years. A Ross Sterling Player alumnus who acts, directs, and coaches upcoming artists, his theatre credits include (but not limited to): Where Were You in '65, Moon on a Rainbow Shawl, Blues for an Alabama Sky, Christmas is Comin' Uptown, The Marriage, Driving While Black, Lotto Experience The Dream, Stick Fly, and Cuttin' Up.
His TV/Film credits include (but not limited to): Crime Strike, Pit of Vipers, Lucy You Love It, and Three Days of Rain.

Sloane Teagle is a Houston-based actress and performing artist with a strong interest in creating thought-provoking art that challenges both the audience and the creative team. She is a graduate of Texas State University’s BFA Theatre Program and is currently working towards her Master of Fine Arts in Physical Theatre from Mississippi University for Women in conjunction with Accademia dell’ Arte in Arezzo, Italy. No stranger to the stage, Sloane has been acting since the age of 8 when she was first introduced to theatre through the Ensemble Theatre’s Young Performer’s Program. She went on to become a member of the Broadway Bound Youth Musical theatre company for five years, where she starred in productions and taught for the company’s youth summer camps.
Some of her theatre credits include: The Trojan Women (Casandra), Pretty Fire (Charlayne), Once On This Island (Timoune), & The Wiz (Dorothy). Sloane is elated to be working with ACTing Up Studios!
